Bologna on foot: museums, exhibitions, and theatres

A February dedicated to culture

Bologna, a city of timeless charm, is a true paradise for culture lovers. In February, with unmissable exhibitions, theatre performances, and unique events, the Emilian capital comes to life, offering a rich calendar of cultural experiences.

If you’re planning a visit, perhaps for a romantic getaway on Valentine’s weekend, and want to immerse yourself in the city’s artistic atmosphere, we’ve designed a walking itinerary through museums, galleries, and theatres. It’s the perfect way to discover Bologna’s most fascinating and cultured side.

Must-see exhibitions

Beyond reality: David LaChapelle in Bologna

Location: Galleria Cavour 1959, Via Giovanni Massei 1, Bologna
Dates: 1 February – 15 March 2025

This exhibition showcases over 30 works by one of the most influential contemporary photographers, renowned for his glossy, surreal portraits of celebrities and iconic figures. It delves into LaChapelle’s signature themes, fame, consumerism, spirituality, climate change, and the relationship between art, fashion, and society, through a visually striking language of colour, symbolism, and provocation. A unique opportunity to be inspired by his extraordinary visual universe.

Scartavetro – Mirko Donati and Andrea Melò

Location: Lino’s Edicola (former historic newsstand of Lino Neri in the heart of Pratello, No. 68)
Dates: 1 – 23 February 2025

Part of the ART CITY Bologna 2025 programme (running from 6 to 16 February at Bologna Fiera), this exhibition connects the works of Bologna-based artists Mirko Donati and Andrea Melò. It explores the relationship between material, time, and transformation, intertwining paper, glass, metal, and earth in a compelling visual narrative of strength and fragility. This immersive exhibition invites visitors to reflect on material as memory, transformation, and storytelling, revealing the hidden beauty in the dialogue between opposing elements.

Antonio Ligabue exhibition

Location: Palazzo Pallavicini, Via San Felice 24, 40122 Bologna
Dates: Until 16 March 2025

For the first time in Bologna, Palazzo Pallavicini hosts a major retrospective dedicated to Antonio Ligabue, one of Italy’s most extraordinary expressionist painters. With over 120 works, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and engravings, the exhibition unveils the emotional intensity and creative power of an artist who transformed pain and solitude into pure visual energy.

From his famous self-portraits, reflecting his lifelong quest for identity, to his ferocious tigers, majestic lions, and birds of prey fighting for survival, the exhibition immerses visitors in Ligabue’s wild, powerful vision of nature and humanity. A must-see experience to explore the inner world of this visionary artist, where instinct and artistry collide in an explosion of colour and intensity.

Museums worth visiting

Civic archaeological museum

Located just steps from Piazza Maggiore, the archaeological museum houses one of Italy’s most important archaeological collections, offering a fascinating journey into the past. Housed within the 15th-century Palazzo Galvani, the museum showcases artefacts spanning from prehistory to the Roman era, with dedicated sections on Etruscan and Greek civilizations. Of particular note is the Egyptian collection, one of the richest in Europe. A must-visit for history and archaeology enthusiasts.

Mambo – museum of modern art of Bologna

If contemporary art is your passion, MAMbo is an essential stop. It is Bologna’s beating heart of modern art, located in the former Forno del Pane building. The museum features a rich permanent collection tracing the evolution of Italian art from the post-war period to today, with a strong focus on avant-garde movements. MAMbo also hosts temporary exhibitions by international artists, events, and experimental projects, making it a dynamic space for cultural research and innovation.
